The School of Materials Science and Engineering at Hefei University of Technology started from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1945. In 1982, it established the Department of Metal Materials and Forming Technology, followed by the establishment of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1988. In 1998, the School of Materials Science and Engineering was officially established, making it one of the earliest schools to establish a materials science and engineering department in China.

The school offers a PhD program in materials science and engineering and a postdoctoral research station. It also has five master's degree programs in materials processing engineering, materials science, materials physics and chemistry, composite materials, and digital materials forming. In addition, there is a master's degree program in materials engineering. The school offers six undergraduate majors: materials forming and control engineering, metallic materials engineering, inorganic non-metallic materials engineering, materials physics, powder materials science and engineering, and new energy materials and devices. Among these majors, materials processing engineering, materials science, and materials physics and chemistry are key disciplines in Anhui Province.

The school is equipped with several research facilities, including the National Joint Engineering Research Center for Nonferrous Metals and Their Processing Technology, the Ministry of Education's Copper Alloys and Forming Processing Engineering Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Copper Alloys and Forming Processing of the Machinery Industry, the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Functional Materials and Devices, the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Nonferrous Metals Processing, the Anhui Provincial Powder Metallurgy Engineering Technology Center, and the Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Nonferrous Metals Materials and Processing.

Currently, the school has 114 full-time teachers, including 38 senior professors and 54 associate professors. There are 27 doctoral supervisors, with a doctoralization rate of 92.98%. Teachers with overseas study or work experience account for 64.04%. The school has more than 2,000 undergraduate students, over 600 graduate students, and more than 20 postdoctoral researchers. The school has a laboratory area of 14,000 square meters and laboratory equipment worth over 100 million yuan.

The school has formed distinct characteristics and advantages in six main research directions: high-performance metal materials, metal solidification and amorphous alloy materials, new energy materials and devices, advanced electronic functional materials, novel inorganic non-metallic materials, and materials forming and processing. In the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 90 national and provincial key research projects, including projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the National "863" High-Tech Research Program, the National 973 Program, military "863" Programs, the National Science and Technology Support Plan, the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Support Plan, the Fund for Doctoral Programs of Universities, major international cooperation projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, military projects, etc. The school has also received over 300 invention patents and published 14 monographs and textbooks. Additionally, it has published over 900 high-level papers in prestigious international journals such as Adv. Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., Small, Physical Review X, Chem. Mater., ACS Nano, Acta Materialia, Journal of Power Sources, etc.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering at Hefei University of Technology has established extensive and close international cooperation and academic exchanges with many renowned universities and research institutions in countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Denmark, etc. Every year, teachers and outstanding students are selected to pursue master's and doctoral degrees in these countries through inter-school exchange programs. In addition, exchange students are sent to and from internationally renowned universities. In recent years, the school has hired nearly 20 well-known scholars both domestically and internationally as visiting professors and part-time professors, and invited more than 40 renowned scholars and experts from home and abroad to give lectures at the school.
